What are the benefits of mushrooms?
- Reduce Inflammation - Many mushrooms like reishi, shiitake, and maitake contain beta-glucans and other compounds that can significantly reduce inflammation throughout the body. Less inflammation promotes overall health.
- Support Immune Function - Mushrooms have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-tumor properties due to beta-glucans as well as other antioxidants like selenium and vitamins C & D. They help boost immunity and fight illness.
- Improve Gut Health - Compounds like short chain fatty acids, prebiotics, and probiotics in certain mushrooms improve digestive health, nutrient absorption, and gut microbiome balance. This aids many issues stemming from poor gut health.
- Protect Heart Health - Lectins in shiitake mushrooms have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure, decreasing risk of heart disease and stroke through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Regulate Blood Sugar Levels - Some mushrooms contain enzymes, fibers, and compounds that help modulate blood sugar spikes and dips, helpful for managing or preventing diabetes.
- Support Mental Health - Many mushrooms like lion’s mane, reishi, and cordyceps work to balance neurotransmitter production/regulation in the brain for enhanced mood, memory, focus, and cognition.
So in many ways, thoughtfully incorporating more medicinal mushrooms into one's diet can support whole body wellness. As with any supplement, modulate dosage carefully.
